Japan Day 6 - Nara

Nara is about an hour away from Osaka.
It was the ex-capital of Japan .. full of historic treasure.
We felt it is one of the must go places if you are in Kansai.

For breakfast :p we got some sushi wrapped around by a persimmon leaf .
Like those from kyoto - the fish used was pickled/cured

more wheel cake!
They also sell the cake in bite size chunks - which is what we've got :p

This is a very famous mochi shop
The mochi are freshly made every single morning
Here's a video of them in action!! we missed it unfortunately

It was one of the best we have had!!
very soft and it has a quiet fragrant from the leaves that they have added onto the mochi dough
I WANT MOREEEEEEEE

more grilled rice cracker :)

One cute thing about Nara is - there are deer EVERY WHERE!!!
There are crackers (thin wafer like) that you can buy and feed the deer.
The deers seem to keep a watchful eye onto the shops.
As soon as they've noticed that you have those crackers in your hand, all of them will come towards you :p nodding their heads asking for food.

so cute :)

Deer has to shop too!

Lunch

We had Japanese Claypot rice- - where the rice was cooked in seaweed/dashi stock. with chopped veg and some seafood like prawn and eel in this case

Keith had homemade macha soba - it was surprisingly nice!!!
it is slightly thicker than regular soba.

This restaurant looks like a cheap canteen.  We had no expectation on the quality of food at all but we were pleasantly surprised!

soya icecream with brown sugar one - yum yum yum

The deers seem to be very curious about this dozing man :p

The main tourist sites are:

Todaji - the largest wooden architecture in the world.

so magnificent.
with a giant Buddha instead.
there's a little hole in one of the pillar behind the Buddha  - which is the same size as the Buddha nostril
Apparently, if you can squeeze yourself through the hole - you will have a great year ahead!  :p

Kasuga Grand Shrine 春日大社

Kōfuku-ji  興福寺

For dinner, we went to a katsu restaurant as recommended by our guide book on the main shopping street.
It was nice but nothing special
Katsu with plum stuffed inside
The acidity of the plum made the katsu slightly less heavy.  :)
