California Road Trip - Day 10 - Kayaking at San Simeon / Hearst Castle

For breakfast, we went to Creekside gardens - make sure we are well fed before kayaking

Keith had Cornbeef hash with scramble eggs while I had pancakes.
The portion was HUGE!! There's no way I could finish it :(

We weren't sure about going kayaking that morning because the weather looked miserable.
But we went ahead at the end - and we are very glad we did because it became one of the highlights of the trip.

Found "Sea for yourself, Kayak outfitters" from tripadvisor.
You could either join on of their tours (which is what we did) or just hire the equipment and roam around yourself.

Their facebook page:

We went onto the San Simeon Cove tour ($50 per person)

They have everything you need including wetsuit and waterproof camera so you just have to turn up.
Cubby, the owner is super friendly and knowledgeable about the area and wildlife.
I can tell he cares about the wildlife a lot - he made sure we keep a good distance and do not disturb the.  He also works with the local marine reserve team if he sees anything strange.

For the tour, it is not possible to just drop in.
It was very easy to book - just email him in advance

As we paddled around, there was this little harbour seal that keeps on following us.  He kept on popping his head out of the water snooping around :p soooo cuteeeeee

He also introduced us this "local resident" - a little male otter.
He was having a nap, wrapped himself around with the seaweed to avoid being blown away by the waves.

He then showed us this little cove where you had to paddle through between wave in order not to get wet.  He asked if anyone else want to try and Keith was overly keen and screamt "We'll" before consulting me!!!! I  went all panicky and nearly had a heart attack but we survived.

Found one of those "By the wind sailors" in the sea

The guys who went on the fishing tour saw dolphins but we didn't :( Oh well..
but we truly enjoyed our trip and we would highly recommend it.

We then drove up to Hearst castle.
Remember to buy your ticket in advance on the website.  The tours do get booked up

You can only visit if you join a tour.

You may not want to take the last tours on the day because following the tour, you may want to roam around the beautiful garden, visit the pools and enjoy the view from the top.

We joined the Grand rooms tour

We felt as if we were in Italy - like one of the mansions in Lake Como :p

Since California was in a drought, understandably, the outdoor pool was not filled.

We were going to go to the outdoor cinema at San luis obispo afterwards but we were just too tired.
