Kyushu/Chugoku Japan Day 3 - Hiroshima

We got the JR Sanyo-Shikoku-Kyushu Pass in London and have to activate it at Hakata
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361_07.html
We bought a 5 day pass and we got our money back as we took a few long journeys.
You can check the train time/single ticket price here: http://www.hyperdia.com

It takes just over an hour to get to Hiroshima by the bullet train! (while it takes 4 hours to drive there)
Before setting off, we went to this Bento shop just opposite the gate:
we were spoilt with choice :)

We picked these two at the end

Beautifully presented seafood bento :)

Unlike what you get here in the UK - Baguette, sandwiches, KFC
Love the fact that there are so many amazing options in the train station.
Of course its not as nice as when its freshly cooked in a restaurant. but it was delicious.

Having dropped our luggage at our hotel near the station, we've decided to walk across the city
It is a lot quieter than Hakata but still lots of nice little restaurants and shops.

bought these giant strawberries from a fruit store.. 250 yen only :)

First stop was the peace memorial park and the museum.

little birdies on the cherry blossom tree

Done by the local students

The pocket watch stopped exactly when it happened

It was depressing but also very interesting.

Hiroshima is famous for its okonomiyaki ( Japanese pancake/pizza)
Its different from the one we had at Osaka, where they mix the cabbage with the batter.
They first make a very thin crepe.. then they put it on top of a pile of cabbage.  They often serve it with stir fried ramen.

Found this restaurant nearby - which is an upstair restaurant

yakisoba with Oyster

Hiroshima castle
We then walked to the castle.  It was destroyed by the atomic bomb but was then rebuilt.

We were sooooo tired from all the walking / stairs climbing so we stopped by for afternoon tea inside a shopping mall

The waffle was really niceeee
Soft and pillowy
We were too full afterwards for dinner though
